Overview

This blog is about food and eating. But it’s also about everything that revolves around my eating. It will be about my experiences and memories surrounding food and sometimes what those experiences and memories mean to me. I guess in short this blog is about my life – the bits that are food-related anyway.

This blog is also known as my fabulous food porn blog.

Five Main Things

This blog contains five main things about food and eating:

  1. My cooking
  2. The restaurants and shops I visit
  3. Food that I find interesting – especially when I travel
  4. Other people’s cooking
  5. General food observations and pictures

About Me

I am somewhere in my twenties (I recently celebrated my 21st for the second time. I plan on turning 21 again next year). I live in an inner eastern suburb of Melbourne with my husband, Josh, – whom I have many nice things to say about but this isn’t a place for it. I like to eat. I like to cook and I love cooking for friends and family. I love Melbourne for its foodie soul and its respect for food cultures. Sometimes, though, I wish I were somewhere warmer where the sky is bright blue and the water is warm.

I was born in Thailand and lived around Asia a bit. Now settling down in Melbourne. I have impressive amount of stuff in my kitchen. I spend most of my money on cookbooks, shoes and eating.

Love & Hate

The following are my food peeves:

  1. Foam. Enough said.
  2. Communal table where mains are more than $10. Seriously. Not on.
  3. ‘I’ll stick with what I know, thanks’
  4. ‘I only shop at gourmet food stores or markets’
  5. Foodie/blogger media whores
  6. ‘Is that safe to eat?’
  7. Fiddly foods that involves 3 different kinds of puree on the plate
  8. Sushi that are made like sandwiches. Tinned tuna? Shudder.
  9. Gourmet tomatoes. Misnomer much?
  10. Wasting food.

Things I love

  1. Pho. I can’t get enough of it. I can eat it everyday.
  2. Dumplings. Ditto.
  3. Vegetables from farmers’ market
  4. Pure Bread Bakery in Surrey Hills
  5. Cookbooks by real authors
  6. Beautifully presented Japanese food
  7. Fish sauce (hey, I’m Thai)
  8. My absolutely awesome 10kg granite mortar and pestle
  9. Josh’s HUGE Chinese cleaver (Umm, I realise this sounds bad but just take it literally please)
  10. Mama instant noodles with Chinese cabbage, coriander and egg.

How This Blog Came to Be

I started this blog when I was away working in Singapore for a year – where nice, cheap food is plentiful (I used to lunch for SG$2 a day!) and people don’t cook as much.

It’s called Spatula, Spoon and Saturday because Saturday used to be the only day that I really cooked properly. But Saturday is always considered my food day – it’s the day I take a look at what’s left in the fridge, get some inspirations and go out and buy some more ingredients.

Unfortunately, in its former Singaporean incarnation, this blog didn’t work out so well because I ended up working insane number of hours but now that the job with insane hours has been gotten rid of, I’m back baby!

I now work in a job in the Melbourne CBD that places me in a relatively boring office building whose fabulousness comes from the fact that it’s right in the Flinders Quarters. I loves it.
